what?

This is from yesterday (charcoal) and today (graphite).

Both was done really quick and I am still kind of surprised that it looks somewhat like me. But I would like to do something with just some simple lines and still make it looks human. But for now It seems like I concentrate on the shadows.

me again

Well..

This is done with charcoal that I did myself on my sisters yard last year. They had some (a lot actually) of trees chopped down and I took some oak branches and made a bunch og cute charcoal sticks that I don’t use as much as I should.

But today I tried to sit in front of the mirror again. It is hard.

EDM #155 - Draw something with a step or steps

Decided to try on the stairs of our home. Bribed the four-year-old to be my model yesterday. First I sketched the stars and the flower and then her three times on a different paper. Then today I put them together on another drawing paper and suddenly decided to give it some color. I don’t know why I didn’t took watercolor paper before I started.

me?

Yesterday I took the lemon I bought last week for the EDM challenge (draw a lemon) and put it on my desk. Or let me start some minutes before to really let you see how easily sidetracked I am.

Yesterday I was just about to put clean sheets to our bed. Holding the dark blue sheet in my hand got me to think about the yellow lemon in the window downstairs and how it would go well together for the challenge drawing. I went down to get the lemon and up again. I arranged the sheet and the lemon and put a lamp on the side to get some shadows, I decided to do the lemon with oil pastel.

But the sun came in too strong from the window at my desk so I had to put something there to block it. The first big thing that fell into sight was a mirror and I forgot all about the lemon and decided to practice a face instead. I had the strong light from the side and took one side of the head a time, starting with the shadow-side. I tried to see the different colors of the shades and exaggerated them as much as I could. I took about five minutes for each side of the head.

I don’t think that this image looks anything like me, but it kind of looks like my cousin (Jonas, sorry! :) ) which feels strange. I guess I got something right. I will try it again, it was really fun.

shirt

This is a shirt made of a fabric that grandmother made. She made fantastic stuff in her loom and the most of my things from her is woven things. I have some rolls of fabric too, that I don’t know exactly what to do with. I think I have some of this particular one as well.

This shirt is really worn down on the cuffs because I use to wear it a lot earlier.

this drawing doesn’t show the fabric as well as I wanted so I tried to do a small close up yesterday. I did not get the time I needed for it so I will try again later. I don’t know exactly how to paint fabric so that the texture and pattern is there. I have only tried with ink, watercolor and guache so far, I would like to try it with colored pencils later.

mittens

My inventory of stuff Grandmother made continues.

She did her share of knitting, and I have some mittens and tons of warm woolen socks. Today I did this pair of mittens. They have always reminded me of piglets of Wild boars. Suits my imagination well.

Like the bells I did this with gouache without any sketching first. And then I was just about to add some ink with my dip pen but I took the time to scan it first. Here are the before and after.

the tree.. again!

Why is it that posts disappear? Just when the kids have put all of their effort in waiting for it to be ready. They have, sometimes, the most wonderful patience so I try it again.

Here is the small tree we have outside. I did it earlier but now I thought I do a close up. The colors are off.. the real tree is really greenish but I couldn’t get it right.. so I did the tree brown instead, don’t know why.. maybe because they are supposed to be brownish and my brain is struggling with this new information.

Things grandmother made

I have a dream! I would like to draw all the things I have that is made by grandmother. I have been thinking about it for a long time now. And today I noticed that I had forgot to take down some of the Christmas stuff, three crochet bells of hers that was hanging in the window. I seized the moment and dragged out my gouache.

I haven’t made any art plan for 2008 so maybe this is it. This year I will do the grandma project!

more of the old stuff

This is really old, at least pre-Christmas. I have a lot of chimneys in sight and this is one of the first attempt on roof. I would like to do a lot of roof paintings but I never seems to get around to do it.

This is gazebo is outside here where we live. First I thought that I might do some of this and give to the neighbors as Christmas cards. But I didn’t.
It is not done on location out in the yard, I have a picture I took earlier with my phone.

My teacher and hardest critic

Sometimes, not often enough, I sit down with my four year old daughter (will turn five this year.. very important) to draw something together or side by side. She gives me advises and directions on how to draw different things. I usually tell her that I have the rights to draw my own image in my own way and she in her own. The freedom of the artist.

These scans are from one of those occasions, it was in October or something just never came around to scan them before.

On this particular day I tried to draw a happy child on the paper while talking about something else.

Something negative about my ability to draw people slipped trough my lips. I really try not to do that because I don’t want to put focus on how to draw. Well.. I said that I would like to look at her and practice some happy faces. She said that she would rather show me on paper, “because I know how to draw a happy person and then you can copy me”. She started and she did a happy person:

I had to do two of her style before I got it right (according to my critic, that is. The first, in the red coat was not happy enough. That is why the second got a red balloon. That would make anyone happy, right?). Behind the wheel you can see the attempt before the lesson.
